Dash at the Gala by JustDayside Dash at the Gala by JustDayside
Rainbow Dash in her dress for the Grand Galloping Gala!

So this is actually my first painterly experience with any digital program. I've done digital art before, but it's always graphic and flat colors or just inks or what not. Suffice to say, digital painting is, like, really hard. I think it's pretty easy to tell that this was a learning experienced 'cos there isn't really any unity to the piece, and Dashy doesn't really sit on the, uh, "background" that well. Also, I really didn't have a clue how I was gonna render a 2d pony three dimensionally, but I tried anyhoo. Of all the dresses at the Gala I loved Rainbow's the most, so it was an easy subject to choose when I decided I wanted to try to paint something. Despite this being a learning experience, I actually like how most of it came out, and I'm really looking forward to doing some more paintings. Also, I feel like I need to apologize for how that crest came out, but by that point I was just done with this, hahah.

Lovely! I know you referred to this as your first digitally painted image, but it is quite good. You obviously know what you are doing with respect to color application even if you might be unfamiliar with the particular program (my color choices still seem laughably simplistic :P ). What program did (do you) use?

You've struck a really nice balance between 2D and 3D! I love her dress too, you blended the colors so well ;_; The only problem is the background, and not that its too simple or something, it just doesn't provide a good contrast. A good way to see that is to turn the picture to grayscale, it really shows the values better : )
I feel you on that 2D to 3D transition though, I'm still not sure how to do it convincingly!

Yeah, I'm definitely still learnin', an' backgrounds are kinda my weakness. I learned the whole contrast thing in my more recent pieces, haw, she really does kinda fade away in this one. XD

Thanks fer lookin', an' glad ya like it!

I look at peoples drawings and think:
"I wish I could draw like that..."
Maybe one day people would look at
my drawings and think the same...
